Bonus Units for Ecosystems Collection A

There are two bonus mini-units for Ecosystems Collection A, each with two integrated gridsets and a start grid (launcher). The titles of the bonus units for Ecosystems Collection A are Camouflage and Food Chains and Food Webs. These two bonus units are also included in the full Wonders and Magic of Nature full collection CD set collection.

Bonus - Camouflage

Launcher for CamouflageThe Bonus - Camouflage mini-unit opens with a launcher that includes buttons to open its two gridsets, Camouflage and the writing gridset Camouflage Review. This unit ties in to all of the eight core study units.

Camouflage uses a table of contents format. Some very hard to see butterflies introduce students to the subject. The remaining three topics include the strategies of texture and concealing colors, disruptive coloration, and alarming colors and patterns.

On this example page, can you see a lizard in the photo to the right? He is very hard to see, since he is using texture and concealing colors to blend with his desert surroundings?

Lizard in rainforest

Camouflage Review gives students a chance to write in Clicker Writer about what they have learned in this unit. Photos like this one of a well-concealed rainforest lizard remind them of the topic.

The following page would have a question relating to the photo, and words the student might need to insert as part of the answer.

Bonus - Food Chains and Food Webs

Food Chains and Food Webs LauncherThe Bonus - Food Chains and Food Webs mini-unit opens with a launcher that includes buttons to open its two gridsets, Food Chains and Food Webs, and Food Chains Workbook. This unit ties into all of the eight core study units.

In Food Chains and Food Webs, students consider the hierarchies of producers and consumers that exist in all ecosystems. The diagram on this page illustrates a multi level food chain, and the text explains why each level receives less energy.

Students could apply the ideas presented in this gridset to any of the biome study units, and find examples of food chains and food webs there.

Food Chains and Food Webs Workbook

The Food Chain Workbook gives students a chance to apply what they have learned by constructing several three level and four level food chains. Clicking on one of the cells on the left side of the grid opens a pop-up grid with a selection of producers and consumers to insert.

In this example from the workbook, a student has inserted two levels of this food chain. After adding the top level consumer, this student will write in the text box to the right about the relationships between the pictures chosen and how they form a food chain.
