Math Magic: Addition and Subtraction is a math study set that includes the Addition Plus and Subtraction Plus templates and 12 ready to use math activities built in these templates. The templates are an extension of the Addition Template that ships with IntelliTools Classroom Suite®. Besides creating a subtraction template, Learning Magic has added a new function to both templates. They now assess the student's answer for the correct assortment of objects as well as for the correct numeric values, based upon the problem that has been presented in the text box on each page.
A wide range of subject matter (clip art) is used in the activities to provide an opportunity for additional language development and associative learning while performing the math operations. In working with children, we find that establishing a consistent environment that continues throughout each problem set from page to page helps to hold the students' attention as they go through the process of answering the questions.
The student can check his or her own work by clicking the Check Work button. If something is incorrect, it will be denoted by a red "X", whereas all correct items are marked by a star. The student will receive two marks for each part of the problem, one on the edge of the counting box, showing if the correct number of objects was inserted, and one just to the right on the color area to show if the correct assortment of objects is present. The problem below asks for three parrots in the first box, and two robins in the middle box. This student put the correct number, but not the correct assortment of birds, into the middle box. Check Work places a star for the correct number (2), but also an X because it should be two robins, not a parrot and a robin.
The Addition Plus and Subtraction Plus templates provide an opportunity for teachers to develop their own sets of activities wherein children can practice adding and subtracting objects in ranges from 6 to 10. Teachers can quickly set up an activity by choosing the type of objects and the number range, and then fill in the elements of each problem.
Custom IntelliKeys® overlays are provided for all 12 activities. For the templates, pattern overlays enable you to quickly make a custom overlay for your new activity simply by entering the key content for the two objects buttons.
The activities will run on the Classroom Suite Player, but either IntelliMathics 3® or the full version of Classroom Suite are needed to create new activities with the templates. In addition, data collection and reporting are provided if you have IntelliMathics 3® or the full version of Classroom Suite.
