The Migrations study unit is comprised of three gridsets which can be utilized as a standalone study unit or as an additional support to the Wonders and Magic of Nature collection. In nature there are numerous animal migrations. Some are short and the reasons for the migrations are obvious. Others are much more mysterious. This study unit looks at several types of migrations and provides a basis for students to explore this topic. The science content and reading level for this study unit is at a third to fourth grade level. The opening launcher screen gives students access to the three included gridsets, the Migrations anchor book, a comprehension book, and a review/writing book. The following is an overview of the three gridset books of the Migrations study unit. |
This book is built upon the Learning Magic, Inc. Table of Contents Book template which we utilized in several units of the Wonders and Magic of Nature Collection. In the Migrations book students first read a chapter on migration and what it means to migrate. |
In the subsequent chapters students learn about Ocean Migrations, Bird Migrations and Other Migrations including migrations in the African savanna and the migration of millions of Monarch Butterflies each year from the upper midwestern United States and Canada to Central Mexico. The anchor book is filled with close up photographs of each of the migrations and also provides geographical information regarding the migration paths, lengths of trip and the dangers encountered by the migrants. |
This book provides students with an opportunity to show what they have learned about migratory animals and their routes.
The book includes supporting photographs and twelve multiple choice questions to enable students to show their comprehension of the subject matter. Four answer choices for each question are provided by means of pop-up grids. The answers to all twelve comprehension questions are provided in a Word® document included with this download. |
This writing book gives students with an opportunity to write about what they have learned. The book provides students with a photograph of an animal that they have read about in the Migrations anchor book.
Then on the following page, the student is presented with a Clicker Writer page and asked to write an answer to a question about a subject that was covered in the original reading materials. Special vocabulary support is built in to assist the student in writing. This includes a special vocabulary pop-up grid that duplicates words encountered and defined in the anchor book, as well as words provided in cells below the Clicker Writer writing area. |
