The three gridsets of Manatees can be utilized as a standalone study unit or used as an additional support to "Exploring the Oceans", one of the eight units of the Wonders and Magic of Nature collection. The science content and reading level for this study unit is at a third to fourth grade level.

The opening launcher screen gives students access to the three included gridsets, the Manatees anchor book, a comprehension book, and a writing book. The following is an overview of the three gridset books of the Manatees study unit.

Manatees anchor book

In the anchor book students have their first opportunity to read and learn about manatees. The book provides students with information regarding the physical size and characteristics of manatees, where they live, their native habitats, and their migratory paths.

Students then read about manatees as herbivores and see how they forage for food along the shores and riverbeds in which they live.

Students will also be made aware that manatees are endangered and find out what threatens them.

The close-up photographs and short videos of these marvelous animals bring the subject matter to students in a vivid visual environment.

What Do You Know About Manatees?

This book is a review environment in which children demonstrate their reading comprehension of the Manatees anchor book.

What Do You Know About Manatees? page

The review provides the students with reinforcing photographs of manatees along with twelve multiple choice questions.

Four answer choices for each question are provided by means of pop-up grids. The answers to all twelve comprehension questions are provided in a Word® document included with this download.

Manatees Writing

This final book gives the student a chance to write about the manatee.

Each page of the book provides the student with a photograph of the manatee along with a textbox.

Each student's work can then be saved and printed out as their individual writing book, complete with photographs.
