This study unit is comprised of two related gridsets, the anchor reading book Katrina Rescues and Katrina Rescues Writing, a chance for students to express their thought after reading this moving book. The opening launcher screen gives students access to the two gridsets. The following is an overview of two books.

Katrina Rescues

This book chronicles Hurricane Katrina and the damage it did on and around August 29th, 2005 to the states of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the surrounding area.

In the aftermath of the storm, numerous rescue teams arrived in the New Orleans area to assist in the rescue of the animals and pets that people were forced to leave behind.

The Katrina Rescues book provides a photographic look as well as textual account of the rescue work done by the volunteers of one team of rescuers who came from Pasado's Safe Haven in Monroe, Washington.

The book provides a concise and clear view of the damage done by the storm and the process by which these volunteers aided in the rescue of thousands of animals.

From around the clock medical services, to floating animals out of the flood waters on fence slates and anything else that floated, to providing food, water and loving care--these volunteers did it all.

Students who have read the book and looked at the photography often comment that they never really realized the scope of the damage or the power of the storm until they could see first hand the effects it had on the animals of New Orleans.

Katrina Rescues Writing

This gridset is a companion book to the Katrina Rescues reading book. In Katrina Rescues Writing, children are provided with additional photographs of the storm and its effects.

Students are then given the opportunity to write about their feelings regarding the storm as well as what they would have done if they were involved in the rescue mission.

The writing opportunities are provided in Clicker Writer. Additional writing support is provided in word banks that are built into the Clicker Writer supporting grid.
