Crawfish Festival Adventure

This activity is built upon the Adventures template that Learning Magic first released on its "Adventures in Reading" CD. In this activity students have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the various activities at a crawfish festival. The activity includes fifteen pages and students get to choose which way they explore the festival. There are eight different paths through the environment.

Note: In using activities based upon this template we suggest that teachers ask the students to take notes as they travel through the festival, as they will have an opportunity to write about their adventures in a follow-up journal, also available to download from Goodies.

As they explore, students learn about Cajun food, see a crawfish eating contest, listen to Zydeco music and gain insights into scrub boards, accordions and electrical guitars which are key ingredients to Zydeco music.

In addition to these activities students will also visit the festival's rides and learn about the Zipper, The Ring of Fire, etc. Movies make this visit to the festival almost as exciting as whizzing around the rides!

In our experience, children spend time mapping out their route through the adventure. To encourage this activity, they should be made aware that there are fifteen pages with different sights and experiences they should visit and find. Many children revisit pages to re-read, listen to, and/or watch their favorites.

This activity provides a platform for the child to be actively engaged in the adventure and also provides strong visual, auditory and textual content support for different learning styles. The end result is a strong universal design for a learning environment which children can explore on their own.

Crawfish Festival Adventure was built in Classroom Suite v. 3.2. The activity can be run on the ITAN Player. But IntelliPics Studio 3® is needed to perform data capture, automatic grading and portfolio management, as well as any editing or changes to the activity itself.
