This activity was developed in one of the two-button templates found on Learning Magic, Inc.'s Cause & Effect And BEYOND CD. The goal of this activity, which we developed in conjunction with a fifth grade special education teacher in the Northwest, was twofold. First, she wanted to introduce new language in and around the subject of vehicles via a simple two button choice format. |
In this activity ten pages of pictures are displayed along with question in a textbox, which is automatically read out to the student. The question can be re-read by clicking on the text box if necessary. The child then simply chooses one of the two choices, which are provided as pictures on the two buttons. Because the goal specifically involved introducing vocabulary, the teacher made a simple modification to our basic two button template, by enabling the option to display the button names. |

| The second goal was to provide quick classroom assessment of her students' knowledge in this subject area. The Two Button Learning Magic template has this function built in. Behind the scenes data was automatically collected on the child's responses to each question, which allowed the teacher to track each child's performance over time. This also provided the teacher with initial feedback from the first test run as to her students' prior knowledge of the subject. |
| Even though the Cause & Effect And BEYOND CD and templates were not developed to be a formal assessment tool, we are seeing many teachers use the thirty-five plus finished activities on the CD to provide quick in-classroom assessment of student knowledge over many areas. They are also using the templates to create simple tests on specific topics for which they need assessment. This in turn has allowed them to further streamline their instruction to fill student "knowledge holes". |

This activity was built in Classroom Suite v. 3.2. The activity can be run on the ITAN Player. But IntelliPics Studio 3® is needed to perform data capture, automatic grading and portfolio management, as well as any editing or changes to the activity. With a copy of IntelliPics Studio 3®, an educator can easily change the questions, answers, and data collection components of the Vehicles CE&B activity to meet different educational needs. Please also note that the clipart used in this activity is from the Nova Development Art Explosion Collection of over 800,000 images and cannot be used in other activities unless you own a copy of the aforementioned collection.
