The Great Storm of 1900

The hurricane season is upon us, and we naturally remember the many severe storms last year, especially Hurricane Katrina. This acticity relates the events of an earlier hurricane as powerful as Katrina that completely devastated a Gulf Coat city a little over a hundred years ago. Contemporary music and photos take students back to this time period and illustrate the storm, the effects, and the efforts that were taken to repair the damage.

We have utilized the Learning Magic Text and Graphics Click to Read TGCR template from our "Comprehension" CD for this activity, modifying it slightly so that there are two reading pages before each question page. A report with the student's responses to all the questions will be generated if you are running Classroom Suite.

The imaginative measures that the citizens of Galveston, Texas took to make sure their city would withstand future storms could be a discussion-starter for what changes present-day cities along the coast including New Orleans might make to increase their safety from hurricanes.
