Q. My Own Bookshelf seems to take a very long time to boot up, and some operations, such as importing books, are slow. I'm using MBS on Mac OSX. Have you noticed this problem? |
| A. Yes, we have found that My Own Bookshelf takes a long time to load on Mac, especially later versions of Mac OSX. This is possibly because the application in which MBS is written, Macromedia Director, has not been recently updated for Mac OSX. We have also noticed that MBS slows down as more and more books are loaded, because it indexes all of them when it starts up. It also seems to go slower as more books are added, in operations such as publishing, and loading in bookshelves. Unfortunately, Learning Magic cannot speed up the operation on Mac OSX. To see if you would have problems with our books on Mac OSX, we suggest you download the Goodies from the SoftTouch Goodies section, import them (through the Publishing section of MBS), set up a bookshelf for them, and then use the Read functions to choose this bookshelf for a student. This will give you a chance to test out your system with our books before you buy. |
Q. When the page reads out loud, the highlighting does not seem to be in sync. Is there anything we can do to fix that? |
| A. The highlighting is a function of My Own Bookshelf, not something that can be set by the user--or by developers such as Learning Magic. It seems to vary depending on the speed of the computer the book happens to be in. |
Q. We are using the Bookreader to read the books on Natural Disasters. Often it freezes up when we click Stop. Is this a known problem? |
| A. Yes, Learning Magic has also observed this sometimes. If it happens, use the key combination Control-Alt-Delete on Windows, or Option-Command (open Apple)-Esc on Mac to force the Bookreader to quit. |
Q. Can we change the text color and background? Some of our students who have visual problems need certain combinations for good contrast. |
| A. You can make these changes to books if you have the full version of My Own Bookshelf, not the Bookreaders, or to tests if you have Test Me Score Me. Choose the Book or Make Test sections, as if you were creating a new book or test. Double-click a text box to edit it. You can change the color of both the text and the background. You can change the text size as well in this dialog. If you change the text size, you might also need to move and resize the text box. Note: There is no global change function, so you must make changes on each page. When you have made all the changes, click Finish. Then go into the Bookshelves or File Cabinets sections, and put the book or test back onto the bookshelf or file cabinet. This insures that the changed version will be available to read or for taking the test. |
